Hundreds rally as Rockford teachers escalate fight for contract with school district

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Susan Nicholas stands along the curb outside Rockford Public Schools’ administration building in downtown. A few hundred fellow educators, community members and more join her in chants for “fair contract now.”

“We know that we’re struggling from the district side of making sure that our voices are heard,” said Nicholas, who teaches health at Jefferson High School.

The educator of nearly a decade is one of nearly 2,000 Rockford Education Association Members who have worked without a contract since the 2025-2026 school year started in August.

On Tuesday night, around 300 people gathered beneath RPS headquarters shouting, “What do we want? A fair contract!”…
