Duane Meyer found guilty of killing ex-wife and son in house fire

OREGON, Ill. (WTVO) — A jury has reached a verdict in the high‑profile murder and arson trial of Duane Meyer, nearly ten years after a Byron mother and her young son were killed in a 2016 house fire on Silverthorne Drive.

Jurors returned to the courtroom today and delivered their decision at approximately 8:45 p.m., finding Meyer guilty on all 14 charges, including first-degree murder of his ex-wife, Margaret “Maggie” Meyer, first-degree murder of their son, Amos, 3, and aggravated arson.

Prosecutors argued throughout the trial that Meyer intentionally killed his ex‑wifeby strangulation, and then set the Byron home on fire with their son Amos still inside. Investigators testified that Maggie was found deceased in the basement and that Amos died from the effects of the fire…
