New mural welcomes students to Machesney Elementary in 40 languages

MACHESNEY PARK — A new mosaic mural created by students and community members welcomes you to Machesney Elementary School with greetings in 40 languages.

The school unveiled “Hello Machesney” on Wednesday morning. The approximately 6-foot by 7-foot clay and tile mural was conceived by artist and art teacher Ingrid Hyde, who spearheaded the collaborative project intended to celebrate the community’s diversity and culture.

“Ingrid is a perfect example (of someone) who had a creative idea to bring her students together around this wonderful messaging and art,” said Jennifer Stark, executive director of the Golden Apple Foundation, which provided a $450 grant to help pay for supplies. “She’s a fabulous artist in our community, on top of being a fabulous art teacher in our community. She knows how to bring everybody together around creativity and art.”…
