Violent crime drops again in Rockford in 2025; shootings, homicides down but auto thefts rise

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Violent crime in Rockford fell for the fourth straight year in 2025, with the Rockford Police Department reporting 1,359 violent offenses—down from 1,627 in 2024, a 16.5% decrease.

Homicides dropped from 18 in 2024 to 12 in 2025, and detectives cleared 92% of homicide cases last year, following clearance rates of 94% in 2024, 90% in 2023 and 47% in 2022.

Mayor: “We are continuing to move in the right direction”

In a video message following the city’s public safety press conference, Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara said the 2025 results demonstrate meaningful progress.

“We saw significant decreases in violent crime and shots fired and a 20‑year low in homicides,” McNamara said. “But what is really important to me is also looking at a longer time period… this longer time period really shows us what our trends are and if we’re moving in the right direction.”…
