Rockford’s Auburn Street construction to cause delays starting March 17

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford drivers should expect delays while traveling on Auburn Street, as construction is set to reduce traffic to one lane in each direction during Phase I of a new $6 million project.

According to City Engineer Tim Hinkens, construction is set to begin Tuesday, March 17, on the first phase of a construction project that aims to ultimately reduce its four lanes to three and make way for sidewalks on both sides of the street.

Water main and roadway construction is expected to last until November, with side path, utility pole relocations, and parkway restoration extending into Spring 2027, the city said.

Work will begin between Central Avenue to Avon Street and Horsman Street to Main Street, leaving one lane open in each direction…
