Beloit School District receives $2.5 million donation to combat falling literacy rates

The Beloit School District school board accepted a $2.5 million donation from the Hendricks Family Foundation this week during its latest meeting to launch an intensive literacy tutoring program. The funding comes as the district faces falling literacy rates throughout its elementary schools.

“We do a lot of great things in this school, but we have to acknowledge when we’re, we’re not where we want to be, we’re not where we want to be in reading and math,” Superintendent Dr. Wayne Anderson told Eyewitness News.

The donation proposal follows last year’s Wisconsin State Report Cards, showing that elementary schools across the district are falling behind in literacy. During the past year, no elementary school in the district had more than 25% of its students meeting or exceeding expectations in reading…
