OSF Saint Anthony event features inflatable colon to encourage cancer screenings

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – An unusual event Wednesday featuring an inflatable colon brings attention to the dangers of colon cancer while teaching community members and patients about the disease.

OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center held the event March 11 in its lobby recognizing Colon Cancer Awareness Month.

Participants were able to walk through a giant inflatable colon that shows the ways the disease progresses along with risk factors.

Health experts say the event is just part of a larger goal to make sure those who may have symptoms, or are 45 and older, get screened.

“It is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Americans under 50. We are seeing it more in younger patients. We wanted to get the word out to get in, get screened, and prevent colon cancer all together.” says Dr. Ilche T. Nonevski, MD, of Rockford Gastroenterology Associates (RGA)…
