Rockford Public Schools announce layoffs to balance budget

ROCKFORD, IL — Rockford Public Schools plans to close a projected $15 million budget deficit by restructuring and laying off 110 central office and non-classroom employees, officials announced in a news release.

District officials say the painful cuts are part of a plan to restructure the school district. They say the cuts are needed to balance the budget and “to maintain long-term financial stability while keeping the focus on students and classrooms.”

“Everything we do as a district starts with one goal, making sure our students have the support and opportunities they need to succeed,” Superintendent Ehren Jarrett said in the release. “Facing this financial reality means making thoughtful decisions now so we can continue providing strong schools for our community.”…
