Boone County Board censures member after church theft allegations

Boone County Board Members have voted to censure one of their own and strip him of committee assignments after he pleaded guilty to attempted theft from a church.

Board Member Marion Thornberry was charged March 10, 2025, with attempted theft after he was accused of trying to take a $20 bill from a donation envelope at St. John’s Evangelical Church in Belvidere.

Thornberry on March 9 pleaded guilty in Boone County Court to attempted theft under $500 from a school or place of worship, a Class A misdemeanor. He was sentenced to 12 months court supervision, electronic court records show…
