Powassan virus detected in Winnebago County ticks for the first time, health officials urge precautions

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — For the first time, ticks in Winnebago County have tested positive for the Powassan virus, according to the health department.

There is no vaccine for the Powassan virus, which is named after the town of Powassan, Ontario, where it was identified in a young boy after his death.

The Winnebago County Health Department says the virus can lead to “serious health complications impacting the heart, skeletal, and nervous systems.”…
