Residents sound off on data center as panel reviews proposed south Rockford TIF district

ROCKFORD — An advisory panel’s review of a proposed tax-increment finance district on the city’s south end was notably missing two words that piqued most people’s interest in the plan: data center.

The Joint Review Board, a committee comprised of representatives of the taxing bodies that would be affected by the TIF, heard information Tuesday at City Hall about the reasons the mostly agricultural land near Edson Road west of Illinois 251 would be eligible for a TIF district.

That information made no mention of the projects that could receive funding through the TIF, but it’s the potential for a data center to be developed on the land that drew residents to what’s normally a sparsely attended meeting that serves as a step in the process to create a TIF…
