ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – The Rockford Police Department reminds people to take safety precautions when buying or selling items online.
Tips include:
- Meet in a public, well-lit area. Only meet during the day, never at night
- Use local police station parking lots or lobbies that are often designated “safe exchange zones” as these often have 24/7 surveillance
- Do not pick up items at someone’s home address
- Do not have people come to your home to pick up items
- Bring a friend or family member when possible
- Let someone know where you’re going and who you’re meeting
- Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, leave
- Never send a deposit
