A body was recovered Tuesday from a canal near the American River close to Hazel Avenue, and as of this week, investigators still don’t know who the person was. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office confirmed the recovery but said additional details were not immediately available.
According to FOX40, which first reported the discovery, the body was found in a canal near the river, and a coroner’s office spokesperson said the deceased individual is still unidentified. The stretch of Hazel Avenue where the recovery occurred crosses the American River just below Lake Natoma and Nimbus Dam, a location that also sits near the head of the Folsom South Canal and the Nimbus Fish Hatchery, where water is diverted from the river immediately downstream of the dam, according to the Federal Register.
A Waterway That Also Feeds Local Taps
The canal network near Hazel Avenue is not just a recreational backdrop — it functions as critical regional infrastructure. The Folsom South Canal diverts water from Lake Natoma and the American River past Hazel Avenue to supply water treatment facilities, including the Coloma Water Treatment Plant in Rancho Cordova, per a 2023 water resource report published on DigitalOcean. That dual role — natural river channel and municipal supply artery — makes the Hazel Avenue crossing one of the busiest hydro-infrastructure junctions along the Lower American River.
The identity of the person recovered from the canal remains unknown, and the coroner’s office has not released the cause or manner of death. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office maintains a public online database of active Jane and John Doe cases, using fingerprint analysis, dental records checks, and public appeals to identify decedents when next-of-kin cannot be immediately located, per the coroner’s office’s own records.
