Sacramento County DA announces prosecution team dedicated to combating retail theft

(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento County’s district attorney announced a new initiative on Tuesday he believes will eradicate retail theft, a recurring problem in the area and across the state.

In a press conference in front of a South Sacramento Walmart Supercenter, Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho said his office has created an organized retail theft prosecution unit that includes both a full-time investigator and prosecutor.

The prosecution team will handle cases “vertically,” meaning they’ll work on cases from beginning to end, Ho said.

“What we have here in our organized retail theft prosecution is that we’re identifying those high-value cases, those repeat offenders, the organized syndicates that are working to commit these thefts again, again and again,” Ho said. “We have a prosecutor assigned for just those cases and we have a whole team of prosecutors that handle felony cases and misdemeanor cases.”

The district attorney in Placer County announced a similar vertical prosecution program in early January that included hiring a full-time investigator and a crime analyst.
