Sacramento debuts its first electric waste truck

(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento’s first fully electric waste collection truck has been driving around the city since early September.

The city’s Recycling and Solid Waste Division acquired the truck in August through a grant that helped bring the price down to close to what a regular truck costs.

“Electric side-loaders are extremely new in the industry, and we’re excited to test one out on our collection routes,” said Jesa David, spokesperson for the division, in a statement.

The truck has been in use this month on a residential recycling route. It includes several signs that highlight its use of electric power.

According to the city, the new truck generates no gas emissions and makes less noise than a gas-powered truck.

The public can see the new truck at two upcoming events: the Clean Air Day Celebration at the Meadowview Farmer’s Market on the morning of Sunday, Sept. 29, and the Highwater Jamboree Flood Preparedness Expo at North Natomas Regional Park on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 19.
