Sacramento Stand Down event helps homeless veterans

The annual Sacramento Stand Down event started on Friday, helping veterans experiencing homelessness by bringing together dozens of community resources, including help with legal issues, food, dental, medical and vision services, all at no cost.

“We go out to where they are…and they get all the services that they should get,” founder Don Harper said to FOX40.com.

He said it’s one of the largest homeless veteran outreach projects in the Sacramento area and it has been organized for several years now.

Last year’s event drew nearly 300 attendees during its run of more than two days.

This year, the event runs from Friday through Sunday at the VOA Veterans Service Center located at 10618 Schirra Avenue in Mather . Information on the services and the opportunity to volunteer can be found at this link or by calling 916-389-8917.

“I think all of us get more out of it than the veteran’s group, and we do it for the right reason, but we get a lot more out of it… feels good… it’s important,” Harper said.
