Snow leopard Blizzard to leave Sacramento Zoo for new home

(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento Zoo announced on Monday that Blizzard the snow leopard will be leaving in October for a new home.

The zoo said that the move is part of a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

The AZA implements a Species Survival Plan for certain animals, and this move is part of the plan for snow leopards, the zoo said on its Facebook account.

The zoo said that its animal care team is working with staff at Blizzard’s new home so that the transition is smooth and that planning for future animals in the snow leopard habitat is underway.

As of 3:30 p.m., zoo representatives have not responded to FOX40.com’s inquiries about where Blizzard may be headed.

Blizzard arrived at the Sacramento Zoo at the start of the previous decade. During his time in Sacramento, Blizzard and mother leopard Misha gave birth to cub Coconut in 2018, who later moved to a West Virginia zoo to replicate the natural separation of cubs from their mothers.
