A Fresh Look for South Sacramento: Clean California Unveils New Murals on Spruced Up Highway 99

SACRAMENTO — The completion of a $5.7 million Clean California project on State Route 99 (SR-99) is bringing new life to South Sacramento. Caltrans and the City of Sacramento marked the final touch on Thursday with a local artist completing a vibrant mural at 2nd Avenue, part of a larger beautification effort along the highway corridor.

The initiative, which included safety upgrades, features two new murals at 21st Avenue and 2nd Avenue, alongside 18 steel art panels installed on newly painted soundwalls. The project also upgraded pedestrian overcrossings with improved lighting, aesthetic fencing, and rehabilitated concrete, enhancing safety for both pedestrians and cyclists.

These upgrades are part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s Clean California initiative, which aims to clean up, beautify, and revitalize public spaces while creating thousands of jobs across the state.

State Route 99, a vital thoroughfare linking Sacramento to Elk Grove, has now been transformed into a more attractive and safer passage for residents and travelers. With 319 projects funded statewide, Clean California is making a lasting impact on underserved communities, helping to beautify streets, parks, and neighborhoods while providing local jobs.
