SacRT looking to build up to 20 ‘heat-resilient’ bus shelters

(FOX40.COM) — SacRT said Friday that it planned to build a number of new bus shelters after it was selected for a state grant.

The agency said it would use the $449,900 grant to build up to 20 “heat-resilient” shelters at existing bus stop locations that already have the space for one.

SacRT said many of the spaces that fit that description are currently located in “disadvantaged and low-income communities disproportionately affected by rising temperatures.”

As part of the project, SacRT said it would also look into different shelter designs with a focus on “heat resilience, ventilation, and sun protection.”

According to the agency, the project will begin in Spring 2025.

The grant is part of the Governor’s Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation’s Extreme Heat and Community Resilience Program.
