California college town adapts to punitive new state law that penalizes parking, drivers

The City of Davis, California, has rolled out significant changes to public parking in compliance with Assembly Bill 413, known as the “Daylighting Law.” Effective immediately, the law prohibits parking or idling within 20 feet of any crosswalk, or 15 feet where a curb extension is present.

“The State law was passed to improve safety at intersections, especially for pedestrians and bicyclists,” city officials said. By keeping areas around crosswalks clear, the field of view at intersections is unobstructed, enhancing safety for all road users.

This change is particularly vital for children, who are less visible at crossings, and will help drivers better anticipate pedestrians. For details, visit cityofdavis.org.
