New guidance offers exemptions to Newsom’s ‘return-to-office’ order

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Days after hundreds of state workers picketed outside of the California Department of Human Resources building, leaders inside the downtown Sacramento office released a three-page memo, offering guidance and exemptions to Governor Newsom’s “return-to-office” mandate.

The executive order was originally signed in March, ordering state employees to work in-office for at least four days a week by July 1.

The new guidance from CalHR Thursday orders each state department to establish a policy specific to their needs and requires that reasonable accommodations are arranged for employees with disabilities. Employees exempt from the mandate include those who do not live within 50 miles of their duty station and already have agreements in place to work remotely more than one day per week…
