California Makes Rail History with Testing of World’s First Hydrogen Locomotive

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sierra Northern Railway (SERA) has successfully tested the nation’s first four-axle, hydrogen-fueled, zero-emission switching locomotive in West Sacramento on March 27, 2025. The announcement was made at the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association conference in Denver, Colorado.

Funded by a $4 million grant from the California Energy Commission and administered through GTI Energy, the project aims to revolutionize short-line rail by reducing emissions in communities across California.

“This milestone demonstrates we can replace diesel locomotives with hydrogen-powered alternatives,” said SERA President Kennan H. Beard III.
