Sacramento Police Launch Safety Campaign for Bicyclists as Summer Approaches

The Sacramento Police Department is stepping up its game to promote biking safety on our sunlit streets. With summer upon us, an increase in bicycling activity for commuting and leisure is expected. The department recently initiated a safety alert on social media, focusing on the shared responsibility to extend caution and extend lives. Not to startle, but the numbers are in, and they ring an unsettling bell – the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports 1,105 bike riders were killed in 2022, and there were an estimated 46,195 injuries. According to a Facebook post by the Sacramento Police Department, Sacramento Police Sergeant Anna Mahoney highlighted the imperative for everyone to traverse safely, saying “Bicycling is a great means of transportation and recreation, and everyone deserves to ride to their destination safely.”

To help make streets safer, police will watch for dangerous driving during a month-long traffic safety operation. They’ll be looking for speeding, illegal turns, failure to yield, and running red lights or stop signs.
