Officials warn of deadly risks in California rivers as temperatures rise

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — As temperatures rise across Northern California, safety officials are urging caution before residents head to local rivers to cool off. Warning that the water may be inviting, but it’s also dangerous.

Despite warm weather, river temperatures remain cold, swift and deceptively treacherous, according to park and emergency officials patrolling the Auburn State Recreation Area and the American River Parkway.

“It is coming from the mountain, so it is cold,” said a visitor named Bri at the confluence near Auburn. “No swimming today. Maybe in August.”…
