A Sacramento man finds himself facing federal charges once again, as a grand jury brings forth a new indictment for firearms and controlled substances offenses. Gabriel Erasmo Cabrera, a 22-year-old Sacramento resident with a history of felony convictions, has been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and possessing a controlled substance with intent to distribute, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office press release.
Court documents reveal Cabrera was initially indicted on Feb. 6, for similar weapons charges. The fresh allegations claim that on March 28, Cabrera was found in possession of an illegal substance, identified as fentanyl, along with a Sig Sauer semiautomatic handgun and .45-caliber ammunition, all items he’s legally forbidden from having. Cabrera’s prohibition from these items stems from his multiple felony convictions, which include the sale of a controlled substance and willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, in addition to causing corporal injury on a spouse.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation spearheaded the investigation leading to these charges, with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Douglas Harman and Justin Lee shouldering the prosecuting responsibilities. If convicted for the firearms possession, Cabrera could face up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count. The possession with intent to distribute charge carries a potential 20-year prison sentence and up to a $1 million fine.
