A 21-year-old hiker was airlifted by helicopter off a popular trail in Solano County after collapsing potentially due to heat stroke Wednesday.
The Vacaville Fire Protection District responded to the call around 1 p.m. after the hiker collapsed about midway through the Stebbins Cold Canyon trail at Lake Berryessa. The trail is part of a UC Davis natural reserve and is about 21 miles west of Davis and 68 miles from San Francisco. On the trail website, officials caution that the trail lacks shade and has steep terrain, warning hikers that the area can be dangerous during hotter months.
The hiker was part of a group of 45 Air Force personnel from nearby Travis Air Force Base. After arriving by helicopter, fire officials said another six hikers were rescued. They were treated for heat-related symptoms and released at the helicopter landing site by the medical team. Travis Air Force Base is home to the 60th Air Mobility Wing and covers over 7,000 acres in Fairfield. The base houses more than 7,500 members of the active-duty military and over 2,800 civilians…
