The Long Decline of Sunrise Mall
Sunrise Mall opened in 1972 in Citrus Heights, CA, a single-level indoor mall at the center of a growing suburban corridor. It had four department store anchors and wide halls lined with glass storefronts.
Over time, Macy’s took over two of the four anchor spaces, and a food court was added in the mid-2000s with new tile and a fireplace. For decades, it served as a steady draw for shoppers east of Sacramento.
Parking lots filled for back-to-school sales, holiday runs, and later, tennis matches in the summer. The structure remained largely unchanged, but the names on the signs did change…
