Sacramento area firefighters refresh memorial for 1979 wildfire tragedy

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. (FOX26) — While firefighters from the Sacramento area were battling the Gifford Fire in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, Strike Team 4805C discovered a memorial dedicated to the 1979 Spanish Ranch Fire, where four firefighters tragically lost their lives.

The team, composed of five Type 3 Engines from Sacramento Fire, Metro Fire of Sacramento, West Sacramento Fire, Cosumnes Fire, and Manteca Fire, took the opportunity to clean and refresh the memorial site, paying tribute to the fallen members of CDF Engine 5373.

A Probationary Firefighter from West Sacramento Fire delivered a presentation on the fatal fire, embodying the fire service’s value of “Leave it better than you found it.”…
