Family and friends on Aug. 10 filled the Self Designs Art Gallery in downtown Sacramento to honor what would have been Stephon Clark’s 30th birthday.
The remembrance came more than seven years after Clark was shot and killed by Sacramento police officers who mistook his cellphone for a gun. His death in March 2018 sparked protests, calls for accountability, and reforms within the Sacramento Police Department and statewide.
Stevante Clark, Stephon’s older brother, said the gathering was about more than remembering a tragedy.
