Ami Bera has made a formal request to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Chief Postal Inspector Gary Barksdale for the establishment of a joint task force, according to FOX40. The proposed task force would unite the efforts of the Department of Justice and the US Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), alongside local law enforcement, to combat the ongoing incidents of mail theft that plague the region.
Bera, having collaborated with the USPS and the USPIS, acknowledges that despite such efforts, mail theft and vandalization have not ceased, and the situation demands further action; this message was emphasized in Bera’s letter urging for a proactive approach to removing cluster mailboxes that have been particularly vulnerable and he said, “This Task Force must be empowered to investigate and prosecute the ongoing, unrelenting theft of mail and postal keys, and to address the widespread vandalism and destruction of CBUs impacting residents across the Sacramento region,” as obtained by FOX40.
The necessity for heightened security measures finds its roots in an audit from April 2025 that uncovered serious security lapses at multiple USPS facilities in Sacramento County, with a significant number of mailbox keys missing, thereby laying bare the vulnerabilities of the current system.
