Sacramento DUI suspect faces new charges after car crash victim dies

Around 11:50 p.m. on Aug. 21, the Sacramento Police Department responded to an area near 9th Street and T Street for reports of a collision that involved two vehicles. When officers arrived at the scene, they found two men, one behind the wheel of each car.

One driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, according to SPD. The other driver was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

After an investigation, police said Richard Newman, 33, of Sacramento, who sustained minor injuries from the collision, was found to be driving under the influence and responsible for causing the crash. He was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on Aug. 23 for charges related to driving under the influence, causing great bodily injury.
