Sacramento County Approves Over One Million for Military Style Equipment to Boost Sheriff Safety

Sacramento County supervisors have unanimously approved spending over $1 million on military-style equipment for the sheriff’s office to improve safety in high-risk situations. The purchase includes a Bearcat armored vehicle costing $500,000, a robot valued at nearly $450,000, and 27 drones starting at $5,000 each.

Sgt. Amar Gandhi emphasized that these tools are intended to protect both the community and deputies, noting that the armored vehicle will serve as a regional asset. He also highlighted the value of drones, stating they can be deployed in dangerous areas as a safer alternative to sending in armed personnel.

Despite the unanimous vote, some residents expressed concerns about the expense and lack of evidence supporting the effectiveness of the new equipment.
