Increased cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease hit Fairfield-Suisun schools

FAIRFIELD, Calif. — The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD) and Solano County Public Health issued a notice Tuesday, warning families of an increased incidence of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) in local schools.

HFMD, a common viral illness caused by the coxsackievirus, primarily affects infants and children. According to Solano Public Health, the disease typically begins with fever, stomach ache, poor appetite, and general malaise.

Painful mouth sores usually appear within one to two days, followed by a non-itchy rash with flat or raised red spots, sometimes with blisters, on the hands, feet, and occasionally the buttocks…
