The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) in Sacramento is working with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promote National Teen Driver Safety Week from October 19 to 25, 2025. This event encourages parents in California to talk with their teenagers about safe driving. The focus is on the risks of impaired driving and other unsafe behaviors.
Teen drivers face several risks, such as alcohol use, not wearing seat belts, distracted driving, speeding, and carrying passengers. The California Highway Patrol reports that traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teens aged 16 to 19. In 2023, there were 2,611 deaths in crashes involving teen drivers aged 15 to 18. Of these, 822 were teen drivers.
ABC Director Paul Tupy said that underage alcohol use is still a factor in many deaths each year. He encouraged parents to talk with their children about the dangers of drinking and driving. He noted that parents can strongly influence their teens’ driving habits…
