The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has added four new K-9 teams to its force. The teams graduated on November 7, 2025, at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento. This addition is part of the department’s efforts to improve public safety and law enforcement across California.
The new teams include three Belgian Malinois and one Dutch Shepherd. Each dog is paired with a CHP officer who has between seven and fifteen years of experience. The teams completed more than 400 hours of training over 11 weeks. Their training meets the standards set by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
The K-9s are trained in criminal apprehension and narcotics detection. They help with drug and firearm-related investigations. In 2025, CHP K-9 teams have seized about 7,000 pounds of methamphetamine, 5,000 pounds of cocaine, 250 pounds of heroin, 750 pounds of fentanyl, and 213 firearms…
