Porch pirates cost consumers $15 billion in the last 12 months, SafeWise reports

NORTHSTATE, Calif. — SafeWise, a crime and safety research group, has released its 8th annual SafeWise Package Theft Report, which shows an estimated 250,000 packages have been stolen nationwide each day this year.

As online holiday shopping is in full swing, the organization is informing the public about important statistics: porch pirates have cost consumers approximately $15 billion in the past year. They cost retail companies approximately $22 billion.

“What has gone up this year is the value of each package that’s taken. That has gone up 8% year after year, so it’s almost $150 per package that’s swiped off of porches. They may be getting away with fewer packages, but they’re all worth more money,” said Rebecca Edwards, Managing Editor of SafeWise.

Edwards says nearly $50 million worth of items have been stolen by porch pirates in the Sacramento area. This city ranks number 25 on the list of the worst cities for package theft this year…
