Sacramento City Tackles Homelessness, Over 67,000 Pounds of Trash Removed, 68 Sheltered in Recent Efforts

The City of Sacramento has recently shared an update on its approach to tackling the local homeless situation, with a report detailing activities from December 8-14. According to the Sacramento City Express, the City’s Incident Management Team (IMT) answered 542 calls via their 311 customer service system concerning unsheltered residents.

From these calls stemmed 2,001 “cases,” a term that has been tracked since July 28, which indicates the City’s progressive work in informing the public on its actions against the persistent crisis of homelessness and also the system upgrade at that time. A single call can lead to multiple cases, as each issue reported may require different types of follow-ups or interventions. Out of the cases opened during this timeframe, the IMT resolved 1,898, with solutions ranging from actual hands-on aid to situations where no further action was necessary upon inspection.

Direct outreach has also been a strong element of the City’s strategy, with the Department of Community Response matching 68 people with shelters and other services through shared databases. Additionally, a smaller number, 15 individuals, found placement at the City’s Roseville Road campus or the Outreach and Engagement Center (OEC). As of Tuesday, December 16, the city noted full occupancy at Roseville Road and limited availability, with just two spots open at the OEC, while general City-funded shelters had about eight vacancies each night…
