Active Week Ahead, Elevated Flood Risk

We’re seeing conditions that are pretty active, with rain showers moving in, especially near the Coastal range and into the Sacramento Valley. These showers are expected to become more widespread this evening and continue overnight. For those in the higher elevations, particularly around the Cascades and Shasta County, we’ve noted light rain and high elevation snow showers today.

Looking ahead, the main story is a series of atmospheric rivers poised to bring widespread, moderate to heavy precipitation starting Sunday and continuing through the holiday week. This isn’t your typical weather; we’re anticipating prolonged periods of rain, with some locations in the higher terrain of Butte County potentially seeing around 10 inches. While valley areas might see less, 3 to 8 inches overall is definitely on the table. We’re also tracking a period of gusty southerly winds, with the strongest gusts expected Sunday and again mid-week. This elevated wind potential has led to a Wind Advisory being issued for the foothills of the Sierra (north of I-80) and the northern Sacramento Valley through tonight.
