Smoke-filled storm drain prompts emergency crew response in Citrus Heights

By Sara Beth Williams– — Police and fire crews responded to Rusch Drive at the corner of Rollingwood Boulevard Thursday afternoon and found smoke coming from a large storm drain in the entrance to a canal. Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District said a fire was discovered in a crevice in the canal and was inaccessible due to its location.

Fire crews could be seen on site uncovering and then later cordoning off a manhole cover on Rusch Drive, which released smoke from the storm drain. Police said Sac Metro Fire took point on implementing traffic safety measures.

Sac Metro Fire Captain Mark Nunez reported that the fire appeared to have been ignited by a homeless individual. Crews were able to retrieve a bike and clothes that were on fire and drag them to a place where they could be properly extinguished…
