A garage fire on Longden Circle in Citrus Heights last night injured one person, killed several family dogs, and caused significant damage to the home, displacing the residents.
Fire crews responded just after 5:30 p.m. and found the garage fully involved, with flames extending into the home’s living areas. Officials said the family was able to escape after a smoke alarm activated. The home sustained major damage, and the residents will not be able to return at this time.
Smoke Alarm Spurs Escape, But Not All Pets Survive
Capt. Mark Nunez of the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District told KCRA that the family heard a loud popping sound in the garage shortly before the fire started. He said a working smoke alarm then activated, alerting them in time to escape.
According to Nunez, eight dogs were inside the home when the fire began. Three dogs were found dead, and one was still unaccounted for, highlighting how rapidly the fire spread through the house.
