4 deaths linked to poisonous mushrooms, public health officials say

(FOX40.COM) — Four deaths are now linked to poisonous mushrooms across California, public health officials say.

Between Nov. 18 and Jan. 18, 39 cases of amatoxin poisoning were reported, leading to hospitalizations across 10 counties from Sonoma to San Luis Obispo. That includes four cases in Sacramento County, local public health leaders said Thursday.

Those poisonings are caused by people accidentally eating death cap or western destroying angel mushrooms, the Sacramento County Public Health Department said in a news release.
