Sacramento Fire Department celebrates 176 years of service

The Sacramento Fire Department is celebrating 176 years of service to the Capital City, marking a legacy that began Feb. 5, 1850.

In the mid-1800s, buildings in the area were largely made up of wooden structures, many covered with canvas. As the community grew, a series of fires threatened homes, businesses and the surrounding area, prompting residents to take action.

“We’re all part of something very special,” Fire Chief Chris Costamagna said. “We’ve been out there saving lives, fighting fires and floods since the early 1800s.”…
