Freeport Bridge River Scare as Fisherman’s Grim Sighting Sparks All-Out Search

First responders flooded the Sacramento River near the Freeport Bridge on Monday after a fisherman reported spotting what appeared to be a body in the middle of the water. Crews from Sacramento and West Sacramento combed the river by boat and scanned the shoreline along Freeport Boulevard as they worked to confirm the chilling report. The coordinated search stretched into the evening with multiple agencies involved.

According to FOX40, the fisherman told authorities they saw a person in the river wearing a dark hoodie near the Freeport Bridge and Freeport Boulevard. Sacramento Fire crews launched the initial response, and the West Sacramento Fire Department joined in the search effort, officials told the outlet.

Where crews were working

The Freeport Bridge carries Freeport Boulevard across the Sacramento River just south of Sacramento, and its movable bascule span can complicate work on the water. Per the Sacramento County Department of Transportation, the crossing is considered critical for the area, and seasonal operations along with river traffic can shape how search and rescue teams move and stage equipment during an incident like this.
