On February 17, the Sacramento health department conducted a routine check at Cheesesteaks. The restaurant was flagged for several health code violations, which resulted in its temporary closure.

Cheesesteaks was found in violation of several health codes and was issued a red placard. The violations were:
- The report noted that old food debris was observed on the meat slicer. The meat slicer must be disassembled and thoroughly washed, rinsed, sanitized, and air-dried, it said.
- One live adult German cockroach was seen crawling out of the knife container located below the water heater near the back kitchen sink. One old German cockroach’s egg sac was observed below the water heater.
- Old food debris was seen on the floor beneath the three-door freezer and refrigerator, below dry storage shelves, and beneath the microwave in the back kitchen. All areas must be cleaned and corrected before reinspection, the report said.
- There was a household microwave in use in the back kitchen. The report noted that non-approved equipment must be discontinued and replaced with approved NSF, UL Sanitation, or ETL Sanitation-certified equipment within 30 days.
- A cup was seen being used as a scoop inside a rice container. The eatery was asked to discontinue the practice and replace it with an approved scoop with a handle.
- Personal items were observed stored above drying utensils on the drying rack.

Follow-up Inspection
According to the report, Cheesesteaks’ health permit was suspended after it was asked to shut down by the Sacramento health department. The restaurant can request the department for a reinspection once they have corrected all the violations…
