Sacramento religious groups come together to serve community, celebrate Ramadan

Throughout Ramadan, Muslim Sacramentans gather to end their daily fasts together. One group is taking the opportunity to embrace and welcome the city’s diverse interfaith population.

The Sacramento Area League of Associated Muslims hosts community iftar dinners at its Islamic Center during Ramadan weekends, inviting observers to break their fasts as the sun sets. This weekend, the group will be joined by midtown Catholic parish St. Francis of Assisi, whose members participate in an annual service event supporting the fasting members of the community.

The league, also known as SALAM, serves a five-course fast-breaking dinner three times per week during Ramadan, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Arwa Houry, SALAM’s executive director, said around 400 people join these open community iftars…
