One person was killed early Friday in a crash that shut down part of the Business 80 freeway near Marconi Avenue in Sacramento’s Arden-Arcade area, backing up traffic for the morning rush. Lanes were closed and vehicles were diverted off the freeway at the El Camino Avenue exit while crews worked the scene and tried to sort out what went wrong.
What dispatch logs and reporters saw
California Highway Patrol traffic logs show the first reports of the collision came in around 1:55 a.m., according to KCRA. A KCRA 3 crew at the scene reported seeing a body being loaded into a coroner’s van and said traffic was being temporarily routed off Business 80 at the El Camino Avenue off-ramp. The station said it was working to gather additional details from CHP officials.
This stretch’s safety record
The Business 80 corridor around Marconi has seen its share of serious crashes. In March 2025, a vehicle rolled off the freeway near Marconi, according to CBS Sacramento. Local planning documents point to the tangle of on- and off-ramps, higher speeds and heavy commuter traffic as factors in collisions along this segment of the Capitol City Freeway. The county’s Local Road Safety Plan highlights collision patterns and identifies high-risk stretches of roadway in the area (Sacramento County Local Road Safety Plan).
