Sac Unified Deficit Estimate More Than Doubles; District Seeks Outside Help

Sacramento Unified School District’s financial struggles just got a lot worse – the district, which serves over 42,000 students, now faces a deficit of $108 million and insolvency if it isn’t solved.

In September, when the district discovered it was at least $43 million in the red, it began instituting layoffs and cutbacks. But at last week’s school board meeting, the true scope of the district’s mounting deficit to $108 million was revealed and the worst is yet to come.

The district’ s latest interim financial report shows by the 2026-27 school year, there will be a deficit around $251 million, and in the 2027-2028 school year, around $395 million…
