Paramedic and EMT recognized for bravery in 2025 medical helicopter crash rescue

(FOX40.COM) — Two Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District first responders were honored Tuesday for their lifesaving actions during a medical helicopter crash response last year on Highway 50, which claimed the life of one of the flight crews and left two others hospitalized.

The Sacramento Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution presented Heroism Medals to Paramedic John Doughty and EMT Edward Slivinskiy during a ceremony at Station 105.

Metro Fire said that the awards recognized the pair’s response to a helicopter crash on Oct. 6, 2025.

The Sons of the American Revolution, a national organization focused on preserving American history and honoring community service, recognized the Metro Fire personnel for their actions under what officials described as extremely challenging circumstances.

According to Metro Fire, the crew of Medic 6105 was dispatched Code 3 to a helicopter crash on a freeway. Responders navigated against traffic on the 59th Street Bridge to quickly reach the scene, where they found a downed aircraft blocking all lanes and a critically injured patient trapped beneath the helicopter.

Working alongside crews from the Sacramento Fire Department, the responders immediately began patient care and coordinated rapid transport to UC Davis Medical Center…
