In the week since St. Louis business owner and musician Steve Ewing’s wife and family dog were attacked by two dogs in Tower Grove Park, stories from people who experienced dog attacks in St. Louis are coming out of the woodwork.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Steve and his family,” Jessie Boucher wrote on Instagram. “My wiener dog, Chip, and I were attacked by two dogs in 2021 when we lived in Dogtown. Chip barely survived, and it was an absolutely traumatic experience.”
Data from the St. Louis Citizen Service Bureau shows an increase in dangerous animal complaints to the city of St. Louis in recent years. The rate of complaints about animal bites is even higher, according to the St. Louis Department of Health’s Animal Care and Control Division. In 2025, the division reported 657 calls about animal bites. There have been 389 calls so far this year.
Among all U.S. cities, St. Louis ranks sixth in the nation for recorded dog bites and attacks on mail carriers and postal employees, according to a new report from the U.S. Postal Service.
