Ferguson community rallies for children of slain mother

FERGUSON, Mo. – A St. Louis community is rallying around the five young children of Shakeela Martin, a 35-year-old mother who was killed by a stray bullet. Neighbors and loved ones are collecting clothing and other essentials to support Martin’s children, who range in age from 2 to 14 years old.

The efforts began after Martin was fatally shot while taking two of her children out for slushies.

A donation drive was held at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Ferguson, where community members filled the church with clothing and other items to address the children’s immediate needs. Family members have stepped in to care for the children following the incident…
